Chapter Eleven

Although Jenny wore the beautiful ring Brand gave her on the third finger of her left hand, she didn’t have time to bask in the afterglow of their engagement. Her studies, as well as time on the floor, consumed all her spare time, and Brand continued to work thirty-hour shifts at the hospital. When they did see each other, they were too tired even to consider planning a wedding.

In January, Mary Little Horse came to the hospital for the experimental therapy. During her stay, Jenny visited often and shared stories about Alex. Unfortunately, they both knew the treatments were too little too late and by March, Mary went back to the reservation to spend her final days at home.

The weekend of Easter, Jenny didn’t have to work and went home to attend Mary’s funeral. It was a bittersweet ending to what began at Thanksgiving. Back then, Mary accepted Alex as her grandson. Unfortunately, Alex hardly got to know his paternal grandmother before she passed onto the next life.

Now at long last, May arrived, and Jenny could begin her real life. It was no longer one filled with studies and hours on the floor at UW Hospital, but a life that included being a mother to her son.

“Today is your graduation day,” Brand said when he appeared at her dorm room door.

Jenny rushed to his outstretched arms. “Don’t you have to work?”

“I managed to switch schedules with someone so I could be there. I have another week and then I’m done as well. I talked to Ben Little Horse, and he told me they’re expecting me at the hospital the second week in June. I’m planning a quick trip out to San Francisco to see my friends Cindy and David before I report to work.”

Jenny knew about his plans to go to California. They’d talked about it and agreed it would be good for him to take a trip and relax before starting work. For the first time, all of their plans seemed real. The only problem she could foresee was where he would stay. They weren’t married, so living together would be completely out of the question.

“Where will you be staying once you get back from California?”

“Ben said I could get a room with him until we’re married and our house is ready to move into.”

“You’d stay there?”

“I will until I can find an apartment close to the hospital. You have to admit, I haven’t had much time for apartment hunting with my schedule.”

“Another thing you haven’t had time for,” Frannie said, “is planning your wedding. You know Mom and Dad are looking forward to hearing the two of you say ‘I do’.”

Jenny smiled. Next weekend Greg and Frannie would be getting married and moving to Superior where Greg would be working in the clinic, while Frannie would be a Pediatric nurse at the hospital.

The Monday after Frannie and Greg’s wedding, Jenny would be starting work as well. For the first time in any of their lives, they would be adults, making their own way in the world and beginning their new lives.
